Mac OS X only: Never been entirely happy with the way your Mac reacts when you plug in your various camera-sporting devices? Wish it could do something different when you plug in your iPhone versus your DSLR? Cameras can help.

Cameras is a free preference pane that keeps track of cameras you’ve plugged into your Mac and allows you to set custom behavior for each device. For example, whenever I plug in my point-and-shoot, I want to import photos into iPhoto. My iPhone, on the other hand, is normally filled more with screenshots than photos, so I’d rather not import anything into iPhoto (in fact, I’d rather it just do nothing). With Cameras, you can set system behavior on a per-camera basis. Cameras can open any application, do nothing, ask you what to do, or just automatically download your photos.

Minitube is a native YouTube client. With it you can watch YouTube videos in a new way: you type a keyword, Minitube gives you an endless video stream. Minitube does not require the Flash Player.

Minitube is in its early stages. It currently has a lot of bugs and still lacks many features I planned for it. That said, it partially works. Try it, report your experience in the comments and spread the word.

Hulu, which continues to see strong growth, has been a web-based video site since day one. As more and more premium content has made its way to the site, now with Disney even in the mix, more and more users have turned to Boxee for consuming that content in a desktop application or via an AppleTV hack.

Now Hulu seems to be throwing down the gauntlet, and today they’ve launched their own shiny new desktop application, Hulu Desktop, that brings all the joys of Hulu to your PC or Mac and works with Apple and Windows Media Center remotes. In fact, they’re even touting it as the ‘lean-back’ way to view Hulu video.

As a whole the application is top notch. You can expect a slick user interface centered around video watching. In fact, it’s hard not to notice that there are elements of Boxee’s sophisticated UI and navigation elements in the new offering. Suffice to say, though, if you’re a Hulu lover, you won’t be disappointed.

Hulu Desktop can be downloaded and used with or without an account, but if you do login you’ll get access to your video queue, subscriptions, and viewing history. You can also customize playback quality and tweak additional custom settings in the preferences menu.

Hulu’s play for your desktop is a pretty interesting and newsworthy move, especially given their contentious relationship with Boxee (who’s only fault was enabling you to engage with the same content in a similar fashion) and the recent demise of Joost’s desktop app.

Also interesting to note is that Hulu seems to have designed the desktop app not to play well with the Boxee app. If you have Boxee running, you might even see the ‘conflict’ message above (though if Boxee’s not running, everything should work smoothly).

If you’re missing the now defunct FeedMyTorrents and its awesome duplicate-free RSS based automation, showRSS offers the same functionality and integration with RSS-enabled BitTorrent clients.

Founded by a refugee from FeedMyTorrents, showRSS has shielded itself from the same fate by setting up camp in Spain where torrents have been ruled legal. The site collects torrents from a variety of sources and weeds out the duplicates. You pick from shows you want to keep an eye on and showRSS adds them to your personal RSS feed. From there you can load the feed into a feed reader and manually select links to shows as they appear or you can plug it into a BitTorrent client with RSS support like µTorrent to automate the process.

And by September! At least, according to the Telegraph, who says that the company is working out the terms of a deal that will open up streaming for over 3,000 hours of American content, as well as content from Channel 4 and ITV. That the Hulu content wall will come down is obviously great news, but that ITV and 4 will finally be moving to a decent VOD solution is exciting in its own right. [Telegraph]
